It’s the night we’ve all been waiting for – draft night!

There’s nothing quite like the excitement and buzz, and this year was no different.

Coaches, recruiters and team officials from every club, not to mention a huge contingent of media, all converged at the Adelaide Convention Centre to witness the next crop of young talent embark on their AFL careers.

For the first time in Carlton’s history the Club had four picks in the top 20, and the Blues recruiting team, led by Stephen Silvagni, has used them wisely.

Carlton selected 18-year-old defender Jacob Weitering with its No. 1 pick. The young Dandenong Stingray’s product has a reputation for being wise beyond his years and has already shown leadership qualities.

With an elite ability to read the play and take intercept marks, there’s no doubt he’ll aid Sam Rowe, Simon White and Michael Jamison down back.

When accepting his Carlton guernsey from his new coach Brendon Bolton, Weitering said he was looking forward to playing for the Blues.

“Thank you to the Carlton Football Club for picking me at No.1… I’m really excited and can’t wait to get underway,” Weitering said.

The Blues selected tall forward Harry McKay with pick 10. The 17-year-old, who turns 18 on Christmas Eve, has an elite pair of hands and constantly uses his body to his advantage.

Another Curnow will also call Ikon Park home in 2016, with Carlton selecting Ed Curnow’s brother Charlie with pick 12.

The Geelong Falcons product stands at 192cm tall and is known for his strong hands, competitive streak and never-ending tank.

Along with all the tall key position players, Carlton also gained some pace on Tuesday night with David Cuningham selected with pick 23.

He has an exceptional ability to run through packs, break through traffic and has been heralded for his athleticism.

And what a way to end the night, with Jack Silvagni making his way to the Club where his grandfather Serge, and father Stephen became champions.

The third generation Silvagni will don the famous navy blue jumper – a dream come true for the 17-year-old.

Blues coach Brendon Bolton, who had the honour of calling out each player’s name, says it’s not just an exciting night for Carlton fans, but also every player at the Club.

“I’m looking forward to these new boys coming to the new Carlton,” Bolton said.

“This is a significant day in the resetting of Carlton, we understand there is still a lot of development and draftees take time to develop. We need to invest in them as a footballer and a person.

“It’s just as exciting for our current players, the likes of Murphy, Gibbs and Simpson will get the chance to lead these boys and educate them.”
