Carlton midfielder David Ellard put a frustrating pre-season behind him, making a successful return to football in the Northern Blues’ practice match win over Sandringham at Ikon Park on Sunday.

The 26-year-old, who injured his calf five weeks ago, was a key figure in the VFL side’s win finishing with 17 possessions (nine contested) to couple two goals; a set shot in the second quarter and a hack out of mid-air in the goal square during the third.

Moving without restriction in around 80 per cent of total match time, Ellard said he was glad to pass the first hurdle of returning to playing.

“It was nice to have a run around and get some run in the legs,” he said.

“It’s been a while since I played, but I got through well, the body held up so I get to tick that off now.

“I was pretty scrappy early, but as the game got on I felt I got into it a bit more.

“I was moving to play last week, but got held back. I m trying to get my preparation right for hopefully a chance for Round 1.

“That first game back and that first run, you’re always a bit wary of things but the body felt good and it all went to plan so I’m happy with the result.”

Injury has always found a way to somewhat cruel the 53-gamer, who is now on the cusp of his eighth season at Carlton.

Yet recording one of his best seasons at the Blues in 2014 as a defensive, pressure-orientated forward, Ellard has a simple mantra to ensure his best football is still ahead of him.

“The goal is obviously to play consistent senior football this year,” Ellard said.

“To do that I’ve got to get the body right so it holds up to play consistently week-in, week-out.

“If I get that right, I’ll see where that takes me.”
